Should You Build or Buy?
Building makes sense if you want dimensions nobody sells, you already own a circular saw or track saw, or you want a PVC-grade enclosure at plywood prices. It makes less sense if you value your weekend more than $250, or if this is your first build and your dragon is arriving next week.
Be honest about the timeline. The build is a weekend. The sealant cure is not, and rushing it is the single most common way DIY enclosures hurt animals.

Dimensions and Design Decisions
Build for the adult. A 48 x 24 x 24 inch enclosure is the floor for an adult bearded dragon, and building the juvenile size first means building twice. Three decisions to make before cutting anything.
Front Access: Sliding Glass vs. Hinged Doors
Sliding glass in aluminium or plastic track is the standard. It is cheap, it seals reasonably, and it does not swing into the room. The downside is the track collects substrate and grit, and cheap track binds.
Hinged doors give you full unobstructed access, which makes deep cleaning much easier, but they need decent hardware and a latch that a determined dragon cannot nose open.
Front access of some kind is not negotiable. Reaching in from above triggers a predator response, and a top-opening box makes every interaction worse than it needs to be.
Top: Solid or Mesh
Solid tops hold heat far better and let you mount UVB inside the enclosure, which removes the mesh obstruction problem entirely. Mesh tops lose heat and cost you 30 to 50 percent of your UVB output.
Build a solid top. Cut a rectangular opening only if you intend to mount fixtures above it, and understand you are accepting the UVB penalty if you do.
Material
Expanded PVC foam board is the best material by a wide margin: R-value 4-6 against glass at R-1, moisture-proof, chemically inert, and no sealing required. It costs more per sheet and needs slightly different fastening. Plywood is cheaper and stiffer but must be sealed thoroughly.

You do not need a router, a nail gun, or a workshop. Square corners and straight cuts matter far more than tooling.
How to Build a Bearded Dragon Enclosure: Step by Step
- Cut all panels first. Cut everything, then dry-fit the whole box before glue touches anything. Check corners with a square and confirm diagonals match.
- Attach the sides to the floor. Sides sit on top of the floor panel so the floor carries the weight in compression rather than hanging on screws. Glue, clamp, then screw through the side into the floor edge on 6 inch centres, countersinking every screw.
- Fit the back. The back drops between the two sides and sits on the floor. Glue and screw through the sides into the back edge, and through the floor into the back’s bottom edge.
- Square it before the glue sets. Measure both diagonals across the open front. Equal diagonals means square. Clamp a temporary brace across the front until the glue cures.
- Add the front rails. Bottom rail first, sitting flush with the floor. Top rail flush with the top edge of the sides. These carry the sliding track and stiffen the whole front.
- Cut ventilation. Do this before the top goes on, while you can still reach everything. See the ventilation section for placement.
- Attach the top. Glue and screw down into the sides and back. If you are mounting fixtures inside, drill the cable pass-throughs now.
- Install the sliding track. Top track first, in the deeper channel, so the glass can lift up into it and drop into the shallow bottom track. Getting this backwards means the glass cannot be removed.
- Seal every interior surface. Covered in detail below. This is the step that determines whether the build is safe.
- Silicone the interior seams. Run a bead along every internal corner after the sealant cures. This is the waterproofing layer that keeps spilled water out of the panel edges.
- Cure, ventilate, then test. Run the lights for 48 hours with the enclosure empty and the doors open before the animal goes anywhere near it.
Getting Ventilation Right
Ventilation is where DIY builds most often fail on design rather than on craftsmanship, because a sealed wooden box behaves nothing like a mesh-topped glass tank.
You want cross-flow driven by the heat gradient itself. Put a vent low on the cool end and a second vent high on the warm end. Warm air rises and exits high on the hot side, drawing cooler air in low on the opposite side. That moves air through the enclosure continuously without a fan and without wrecking the thermal gradient.
Getting it wrong in the two common ways:
- Both vents at the same height — no convection driver, so little actual exchange.
- Vents too large or a fully mesh top — heat escapes faster than the lamp replaces it, and you end up buying a higher-wattage bulb to fight your own enclosure.
For a 4x2x2, roughly 30 to 40 square inches of total vent area is a reasonable starting point. Aluminium soffit louvres from the hardware store work well and look finished. Cut the openings, dry-fit the louvres, and seal around them once the interior coating has cured.
Humidity should sit in the 30 to 40 percent range. If it climbs above that consistently after the build, the enclosure is under-ventilated for your room.
Sealing and Cure Time
If you build in PVC foam board, skip this section. PVC is chemically inert and needs no sealing, which is a large part of why it is worth the extra cost.
For any wood build, sealing is mandatory and unhurried. Three options that are safe after full cure:
- Water-based Polycrylic — easy to apply, several thin coats, the common choice
- Pond Shield non-toxic epoxy — the most durable interior coating, more work to apply
- Aquarium-safe silicone — for seams and edges rather than whole surfaces
Avoid oil-based polyurethane, which off-gasses essentially indefinitely. Avoid any paint marketed as mould-resistant or containing biocides. Avoid solvent-based lacquers.
Pay particular attention to exposed edges and end grain, which absorb far more coating than faces do. Two coats on a face may be plenty; an edge may want four.
Mounting Lights and Heat Safely
A solid-top build lets you mount UVB and basking fixtures inside, which is the better setup because it removes mesh obstruction and gives you real control over distance. It also means heat sources are now attached to a wooden box.
- Mount lamp fixtures to ceramic bases rated above your bulb wattage, screwed into the top panel with backing, never to a thin panel alone.
- Keep at least 4 inches of clearance between any bulb and the interior surface, and confirm with a temp gun after the first run that the ceiling above the lamp is not heating up.
- Run cables through grommeted pass-throughs so nothing rests against a hot fixture or a raw hole edge.
- Fit the UVB tube along the length of the basking end, spanning roughly two thirds of the enclosure.
- Put the basking lamp on a dimming thermostat with the probe at the basking surface.

No front access. Top-opening builds create a dragon that flinches every time a hand appears overhead.
