Captive beardies need artificial lighting that approximates this, or they slowly waste away from preventable conditions.
The two main jobs your lighting needs to accomplish:
- UVB radiation — for vitamin D3 synthesis, which enables calcium absorption
- Concentrated heat — for thermoregulation and digestion
Get either wrong and you’ll see consequences within months. What Lamps Do Bearded Dragons Need? The Complete List
A bearded dragon needs two lamps running during the day, and usually nothing at night. That is the entire answer, and almost every lighting problem comes from getting the count wrong in one direction or the other: owners who run only a heat bulb and no UVB, or owners who bolt on four fixtures because a pet store sold them a bundle.

The Two-Lamp Minimum
UVB and heat are separate jobs and, with one exception, separate bulbs. A basking bulb produces heat and visible light but essentially no UVB. A UVB tube produces UVB and visible light but almost no usable heat. Neither one substitutes for the other, and mercury vapour bulbs (the one product that genuinely does both) are hard to control thermally and not recommended for most keepers.
This is the most expensive mistake in the hobby, because it is invisible. An enclosure with a bright basking lamp and no UVB looks completely normal and correct for months, right up until the point a vet diagnoses metabolic bone disease.
What You Actually Buy

UVB Basics: What It Does
Ultraviolet B is a specific wavelength range of UV radiation (roughly 290-320 nanometers). When UVB hits a beardie’s skin, it triggers a chemical reaction that converts a precursor compound into vitamin D3. Vitamin D3 then enables the gut to absorb calcium from food.
The chain looks like this:
UVB exposure → Vitamin D3 synthesis → Calcium absorption → Strong bones, healthy nerves, working muscles
Break any link and the whole system fails. No UVB means no D3. No D3 means dietary calcium passes through unused. The body responds by pulling calcium from bones to maintain blood levels — and that’s metabolic bone disease.
Why Dietary D3 Alone Isn’t Enough
You can supplement D3 in calcium powder, and that helps — but it’s not a complete substitute for UVB exposure. Beardies regulate their own D3 production through UVB. Oral D3 can build up in tissue, and over-supplementation causes its own problems. Proper UVB lighting plus modest D3 supplementation is the safe, time-tested approach.
Ferguson Zones in Brief
Ferguson Zones are a peer-reviewed framework sorting reptiles into four UV exposure categories based on how they behave in the wild. Bearded dragons are Zone 3: regular open-environment sun baskers. In practice that means a target UV Index of 4.0 to 6.0 at the basking surface, against a background of 1.0 to 2.9 elsewhere in the enclosure.

UVB Bulb Types Compared
Not all UVB bulbs are created equal. The category and form factor matters enormously.
T5 HO Linear Tubes (RECOMMENDED)
The gold standard for bearded dragon UVB. T5 HO (High Output) bulbs are slim 5/8-inch diameter linear tubes that produce strong, consistent UVB across their full length.

Mercury Vapor Bulbs (MVBs)
Self-ballasted bulbs that combine UVB and heat in a single bulb. Tempting in theory, problematic in practice.

Mounting Options
Inside the enclosure (best): No mesh interference, full UVB output reaches the basking spot. Mount to the back wall or top using clips or hardware. Best with PVC enclosures designed for internal mounting.
On top of mesh screen: Acceptable but mesh blocks 30-50% of UVB. Compensate by mounting closer to the basking spot or using a stronger bulb.
On top of glass or plastic: Don’t do this. UVB does not penetrate glass or clear plastic at all.
Distance and Positioning
The most important number in the setup is the gap between the tube and the beardie’s back while it basks. Too close risks eye damage and UV burn. Too far and D3 synthesis never happens.

The Mesh Obstruction Problem
Standard reptile mesh tops block somewhere between 30 and 50 percent of the UVB coming from a tube mounted above them. This is the most common reason a setup that looks correct on paper delivers far less UVB than the owner believes.

Basking Bulbs (Heat)
UVB and heat are separate jobs requiring separate bulbs. Your UVB tube provides almost no usable heat. You need a dedicated basking bulb.
Use Halogen Flood Bulbs
Skip the “reptile basking bulbs” sold at pet stores at 3-4x the price. Standard halogen flood bulbs from any hardware store work identically and cost a fraction.

Visible Light: Do You Need an LED Bar?
This is the newest argument in bearded dragon lighting, and it deserves a straight answer. The two-lamp setup above is still the correct minimum. But a growing group of lighting specialists now treat bright white light as the third part of a proper basking spot, not a decoration, and the reasoning behind that is worth understanding before you decide.
The Case for More Light
A bearded dragon’s home range in central Australia is one of the brightest places on Earth. Full sun there reaches well over 100,000 lux, and even open shade sits around 60,000 lux. A 4x2x2 enclosure lit by a halogen basking bulb and a T5 HO UVB tube rarely reaches 4,000 lux at the basking spot. To an animal built for desert sun, that is a dim, overcast day. The 2025 Reptile Lighting Guide by Roman Muryn, Dr. Frances Baines and Quentin Dishman puts bearded dragons in the “late morning” basking group and sets a target of roughly 30,000 lux at the basking spot, alongside UVI 4–5 and 300–350 W/m² of infrared. The biology behind it is plausible. Diurnal lizards read light intensity through the eyes and through the parietal “third eye” on top of the head, and use it to time their activity. A 2025 study of spot-tailed earless lizards found the combination of UV and visible light, not temperature alone, was the main trigger for emergence and activity. What Isn’t Settled
Be careful with anyone who states a lux number as fact. A 2025 review of reptile welfare science found very little published research on how light intensity affects captive reptiles. The 30,000 lux figure is a reasoned target built from measurements of natural sunlight and specialist experience, not a number from a controlled study on bearded dragons. So: UVB and heat are proven and non-negotiable. Bright visible light is well-reasoned and low-risk, but the strength of the evidence sits a full step below.
Our Position
Get the two essential lamps right first. Once your UVI and basking temperature are verified, a daylight LED bar is the best upgrade you can make, and it costs less than a good UVB kit. If the choice is an LED bar or a better UVB fixture, the UVB fixture wins every time.
If you do add one:
- Buy a purpose-made daylight LED bar, roughly 6,000–6,500K, sized to at least half the enclosure length. Arcadia Jungle Dawn LED Bar, Zoo Med ReptiSun LED, and Sol Reptile VisionLED are the three lighting specialists reference most.
- Mount it inside the enclosure if you can. Mesh blocks around a third of visible light, the same way it blocks UVB.
- Cluster it over the basking end, not the cool side. In nature, bright light, UVB and heat arrive together. Spreading them across the enclosure forces the dragon to choose between them.
- Run it on the same timer as the UVB and basking bulb. Same on and off times. It adds almost no heat, so it will not disturb your temperature gradient.
- Verify with a lux meter if you want to. A basic lux meter costs around $20. Read at the height of the dragon’s back at the basking spot. Moving from a few thousand lux toward the specialist target is the goal; do not chase the top of the range at the cost of a glare-free cool end.

Photoperiod & Lighting Schedule
All lights — UVB, basking, daytime LED — should run on a single timer with consistent on/off times. Bearded dragons evolved with predictable seasonal photoperiods, and erratic lighting disrupts their internal clocks.

The Right Approach
All lights off at night. Period. Bearded dragons handle 65-75°F nighttime temperatures without issue.
If Your House Drops Below 65°F
Use a ceramic heat emitter (CHE) — this produces heat with no visible light, so your beardie can sleep undisturbed. Set on a thermostat to maintain 65-70°F if needed. CHEs are only necessary in cold climates or unheated rooms.
What Not to Use at Night
- Red night bulbs — beardies see red light, disrupts sleep
- Blue night bulbs — same issue
- Any colored “moonlight” lighting
- Daytime basking bulbs left on
The myth that beardies can’t see red light has been debunked. Reptiles perceive a wider light spectrum than humans assume, and red bulbs interfere with sleep just as much as white ones.
Checking Your UVB Is Actually Working
UVB output and visible light output are unrelated. A tube can look perfectly bright while delivering a fraction of its original UVB, which is why replacement runs on the calendar rather than on appearance: every 12 months for T5 HO, every 6 months for T8.
The only way to know real output is a Solarmeter 6.5 UV meter, at roughly $170 to $200. It is not required equipment for a single-animal setup, but keepers who own one consistently report bulbs falling below 70 percent of rated output well before the date printed on the box. Signs Your UVB Setup Is Failing
These behavioral and physical signs suggest inadequate UVB — check your setup immediately if you observe them:
- Lethargy despite correct temperatures — sluggishness that doesn’t respond to temperature correction
- Reduced appetite — particularly when temperatures are verified correct
- Finger or toe twitching — early MBD signal from calcium deficiency driven by inadequate D3 synthesis
- Soft or rubbery jaw — intermediate MBD sign

- Using a coil/compact UVB bulb. Throw it out. Get a T5 HO linear.
- UVB too far away. 18+ inches with mesh = inadequate UVB synthesis.
